Library Research Prize Trophy

The Prize for Library Research is a $250 prize that students earn by demonstrating their substantial use of library resources and services.  See below for more information.

Purpose:

  • To encourage excellence in student research that:

       *  Makes substantial use of library resources and services      
       *  Demonstrates understanding of information literacy competencies

  • To promote undergraduate research throughout the curriculum

The Prize:

$250 and a presentation in the "Primetime @ BU Library” series

Eligibility:

Students registered full-time in the Bethel University College of Arts and Science in any discipline, and who will be enrolled during the semester in which the award is given

Parameters of the Project:

  • May be done in any medium
  • Must be completed for a registered course
  • Cannot be work done as a formal collaboration with a faculty member
  • Cannot be work done in connection with another grant or prize
  • Must demonstrate significant inquiry (the topic must be worth researching)
  • Must be substantially based on research using the Bethel University Library’s resources and services
  • Includes a 750-word reflective essay on the research process (e.g., search terms and strategies used, online indexes/databases searched, criteria used to select appropriate information sources)
  • Both the project and the essay should demonstrate learning about the research and information-gathering process itself

Applicants must demonstrate key information literacy competencies:

  • Exceptional ability to locate, select, evaluate and synthesize library resources and to use them in the creation of a project in any media that shows originality and/or has the potential to lead to original research in the future
  • Evidence of significant personal learning and the development of a habit of research and inquiry that shows the likelihood of life-long learning

Timeline:

  • For the 2013-2014 Prize, projects completed in Spring Semester 2013 and Fall Semester 2013 will be eligible, as long as the student will not graduate before May 2014
  • Applications must be submitted by February 14, 2014
  • Selection of the Prize winner will take place in February
  • The Prize winner will present their project in March or April during the “Primetime @ BU Library” series in the Library Fireplace Lounge

Application Information:

  • Each student may only submit one application
  • To apply for or ask any questions about the Prize, please contact: Carole Cragg (c-cragg@bethel.edu)
  • A committee appointed by the Board of the Friends of the Bethel University Library will evaluate the projects and notify all entrants of the winner in February
