Why is it called Raspberry Monday? On a Monday in July 1972, a young couple with connections to Bethel were out picking raspberries. After they had picked all they wanted, they loaded their boxes of berries into the backseat of their car and headed for home. On the way, they had an accident that sent them into a ditch beside the road. All the raspberries came sliding forward into the front seat covering the husband with raspberry juice, which they first thought was blood. When they realized that he was not bleeding, they began to laugh in relief and thank the Lord for His protection. As a result of the accident, the couple came into some unexpected money and decided to give it to the art department in the form of a scholarship. Since this experience occurred on a Monday while picking raspberries, they decided the scholarship should be called the "Raspberry Monday Scholarship Award." Each year the art faculty selects an art major who exemplifies excellence in studio work and contributes to the Department of Art to be the recipient of this award. In celebration of this scholarship, the Raspberry Monday Student Exhibition was launched in 1973.
