Get the Scoop: Journalism and Mass Media

Publication date: Nov 2, 2009 12:40 p.m.

Bob Edwards

From embedded journalism in Iraq to the evolution of the sports pages, from weblogs to the Wall Street Journal--on your TV, computer, or in your local paper, the mass media is everywhere, framing your understanding of the world around you, giving you a picture of places, events, people you would never otherwise know.

Some have suggested that the free press is the lifeblood of a democratic society, while others have accused the media of polluting our minds and feeding our biases.  How do you get information?  What choices are made in what is presented to you in the media?  Are we becoming more interconnected, or more fractured and segmented?

The books currently on display can take you to answers to some of these questions, or attempts to answer them.  They can take you on a tour of the best journalism since the beginning of the modern newspaper, from clever opinion essays to the heartbreak of a refugee camp.  Gain perspective.  Gain insight.  Lose the brainwash.  Check out the books on display, and get the scoop.
